Laboratory Tests

Early detection and prevention of health issues is of primary importance at Hospital Ochoa. Our state-of-the-art medical laboratory guarantees reliable and swift results.

We perform more than 7,000 types of laboratory tests, including clinical biochemistry, clinical hematology, immunology, endocrinology, allergies, parasitology, microbiology, serology, molecular biology and genetic testing, nutritional medicine, paternity and anti-aging tests.

Opening hours and preparation

Laboratory tests at Hospital Ochoa are conducted between 8:00am and 1:00pm, Monday to Friday. No appointment is needed, only a doctor’s referral.

Depending on the test itself, the patient will need to follow their doctor’s instructions in order for the results to be reliable. For most blood tests patients will be asked to:

  • Fast for 8 hours before the test.
  • Avoid smoking and exercise.
  • Not take any medication until after the test.

Stool and urine tests

In addition to blood tests, stool and urine tests are also very common. Health issues related to the genitourinary system, diabetes and certain autoimmune diseases can be diagnosed via urine tests. As for stool tests, these are often requested when a patient has digestive problems.

Microbiology

Obtaining biological samples directly from the human body is another type of laboratory test. Samples are obtained, preserved, transported and studied to reach an accurate diagnosis.

Types of human microbiological samples:

  • Exudates: These are abnormal liquid discharges produced due to some disorder. They can be purulent, serous or bloody, and located in various parts of the body such as the pharynx, urethra, vagina, etc…
  • Tissues: Because it is a basic building block of human anatomy, collecting tissue samples (e.g. skin scraping) is also used to help diagnose many health issues.
  • Secretions: These are substances produced by the body for different reasons. Certain diseases may alter their properties or volume. An example of a secretion would be sputum.

Genetic tests

These are various genetic tests that can be conducted at Hospital Ochoa’s laboratory, the most prominent of which are:

BiotA200: This test helps identify food intolerances that lead to hypersensitivity reactions. By means of a blood sample, the test contrasts the patient’s IgG antibodies against 200 food proteins.

Serum Diamine Oxidase (DAO): This diagnostic test is used to measure the activity of the blood’s DAO enzyme. It can be used to determine whether a migraine is related to histamine intolerance, as well as shed light on other digestive issues.

NeoBona: This is a new generation of non-invasive prenatal testing. The results are obtained one week after taking a maternal blood sample, and pose zero risks to the baby. It is able to detect chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus, such as trisomy 21 (Down syndrome).

Sept9: This test has a high sensitivity and specificity and allows early detection of colon cancer. It can also detect colorectal cancer regardless of its location, which is the fourth deadliest type of cancer worldwide and its early detection will often allow for effective treatment.

Breath test

This simple test requires a patient to consume a substrate, and the exhaled air is collected during the following 3 hours.

This test helps detect infection by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori that lives in the stomach walls thanks to the acidic environment created by the urease enzyme. A breath test can also diagnose lactose and fructose intolerance as well as bacterial overgrowth.

STD tests

A complete check-up is recommended for ruling out different sexually transmitted diseases.

  • Blood test:
    • Antibodies I+II for HIV (AIDS)
    • HIV p24 antigen (AIDS)
    • Hepatitis B and C
    • Syphilis
  • Urine test:
    • Gonorrhea
    • Chlamydia
    • Mycoplasma
    • Ureaplasma
