Clinical Neurophysiology

Clinical Neurophysiology is a medical specialty focused on the central, peripheral and neuromuscular nervous systems. It uses highly specialised technology for diagnostics, prognostics and therapeutics. All the bioelectrical manifestations of the nervous system are measured and studied via electrophysiological diagnosis or electrodiagnosis.

This specialty is divided into three branches:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Evoked potentials

Diagnostic Tests

Hospital Ochoa carries out the following neurophysiology diagnostic tests:

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG). Essential for diagnosing epilepsy.
  • Brain The depiction of biological quantities or properties onto a spatial representation.
  • Electromyogram (EMG) assesses the integrity of the peripheral nervous system and neuromuscular plate. This test allows medical specialists to distinguish between neurological, myopathic, and motor plate injuries, as well as identify the injury’s location and severity.
  • Motor and sensory Electroneurogram (ENG).
  • Repetitive stimulation.
  • Ischemia test.
  • Visually evoked potential (VEP). Analyses visual pathways and rules out or certifies the existence of tumors or demyelinating disorders that damage the myelin sheath.
  • Auditory evoked potential (AEP). Often used to rule out common hearing diseases among children such as hypoacusis or deafness.
  • Somatosensory evoked potential (SEP). This test provokes a series of stimuli that will be collected in the region where the electrical pulse is reflected. Among other things, it allows for measuring conduction time and detecting spinal cord compression.
  • Trigeminal evoked potential (TEP).
  • Pudendal evoked potential.
